Our Team

Dr. Peter Bergin

Dr. Peter Bergin MBBS FRACP has extensive experience in the management of all aspects of Heart Failure from outpatient management of asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction to the treatment of end-stage heart failure. This includes use of mechanical support, both temporary and permanent as well as use of investigational drugs and devices in severe heart failure.

Dr. Bergin's other major interest is the diagnostic use of Echocardiography and Cardiac MRI. He has extensive teaching experience and was Director of Training for Cardiology at the Alfred Hospital for many years.

Dr. James Shaw

Dr. James Shaw

Dr. James Shaw is an interventional cardiologist with a specific interest in peripheral vascular disease. Following completion of his cardiology training in 1997, he undertook a PhD under the supervision of Professor Dart at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. His thesis titled 'Mechanisms of plaque stability in coronary artery disease' was completed in 2001. Following this, he spent 2.5 years at Massachusetts General Hospital and the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston completing further clinical and research training in coronary and non-coronary interventional work. In 2004, he returned to Melbourne where he helped establish the Alfred Minimally Invasive Vascular Centre which focuses on endovascular intervention for non-coronary atherosclerotic disease. The research interests of Dr Shaw's group are aligned to the clinical interests and involve active collaboration between various laboratories.

His major areas of research include the impact of changes in lipid profiles on plaque composition the role of platelets in atherosclerosis with a specific interest in HDL and the interaction of non-cardiac medications in attenuating the anti platelet effects of clopidogrel and aspirin.

Dr. Meroula Richardson

Dr. Meroula Richardson is a cardiologist who has a particular interest in treating patients with cardiomyopathy and heart failure. She completed her medical training in Perth prior to moving to London where she sub-specialised in heart transplantation.

She was appointed as a cardiologist to the Heart and Lung Replacement Service at the Alfred hospital in 1994 and worked on the transplant team until 2010. In 1997 she was a founding member of the Heart Failure service at the Alfred. Since 2005, she has worked at Cabrini hospital where she continues her strong commitment to managing patients with heart failure.

She has a particular interest in devices for heart failure and implants pacemakers and defibrillators. Links with the Alfred hospital continue through her work with the Pulmonary Hypertension clinic there.

Special interests:

  • ┬áPacemakers and defibrillators

Prof Peter Kistler

Prof Peter Kistler

Prof Peter Kistler is a cardiologist and electrophysiologist with an expertise in the treatment of heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias). Treatments vary considerably and may include lifestyle changes, medication, electrophysiology study and catheter ablation and device implantation.

He is the Head of electrophysiology at the Alfred Hospital and Head of Clinical Electrophysiology research at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne. Prof Peter Kistler is a Professor at the University of Melbourne and currently supported by an NHMRC Practitioner Fellowship. He is an invited speaker at the Heart Rhythm Society in the USA and Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society. He is a member of the scientific program committee for the World Congress of Cardiology Scientific Sessions in 2014 and the Australian representative on the membership committee for the Asia-Pacific Heart Rhythm Society. He has more than 100 publications and has made a substantial contribution to the field of atrial arrhythmias.

He is on the Editorial Boards for Heart, Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology and BMJ Case Reports and is an invited reviewer for international journals.

Part of Prof Peter Kistler's work involves looking at catheter based approaches to treating atrial fibrillation. A procedure which involves making a series of burns within the heart in an attempt to isolate the lung veins from the back of the heart which are believed to be the triggers of atrial fibrillation.

Special interests:

  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Arrhythmia
  • Pacemaker
  • Defibrillators
  • Ablation
  • Electrophysiology

Extra Information from Prof Peter Kistler:

Prof Andrew Taylor

Professor Andrew Taylor is a full-time a consultant cardiologist with the Heart Failure and Transplant Unit at The Alfred Hospital, as well as a visiting cardiologist at Cabrini Hospital. In 2002 A. Prof. Taylor carried out a year of post doctoral research in Berlin, Germany, in cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging, and he heads both the CMR and cardiac CT angiography (CCTA) services at the Alfred Hospital. He also helped establish the CCTA service at Cabrini Hospital, where he continues to oversee patient scanning. Prof. Taylor has been an invited speaker in cardiac imaging at numerous local and international cardiology meetings, and he has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, including in the highest ranking cardiology journals Circulation and JACC.

Dr. Leah Iles

Dr. Leah Iles

Dr. Leah Iles is a cardiologist with a particular interest in patients with cardiomyopathy (heart failure). Dr. Iles also has an appointment as a cardiologist at The Alfred Hospital, where she has worked since 2002.

Dr. Iles also has specialty training in non-invasive cardiac imaging, and has a strong interest in both cardiac MRI and echocardiography. She incorporates both her heart failure and imaging expertise into her post-doctoral research at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute and is widely published in her field. This research is supported by an NHMRC and National Heart Foundation Early Career Fellowship.
